MC Mary Kom, born on March 1,1983 is the first women boxer from India who has won Five World Titles consecutively. This 29 year Indian is the only woman who have qualified for the summer Olympics,2012. She has competed in the flyweight category and won the bronze medal. Also,she has been ranked No.4 in the AIBA world women's ranking flyweight category.Right from her childhood,she had a keen interest in athletics but she had never expressed her interest in boxing to her family members as it was not considered a suitable sport for women.However,it was only after Kom's victory in the Manipur state women's boxing championship in 2000 that her father discovered his daughter's interest. Only in a year's training,Kom started competing at the international level. In 2008,she has won a silver medal in Asian's women's boxing Championship and four successive gold medals in the AIBA women's world boxing Championship which was held in China.
Mary Kom was very keen to get a place in Olympics.It was with this regard that she took part in the summer Olympics,2012. She has been qualified to the quarterfinal round where Nicola Adams(UK) defeated her. After winning a bronze,Mary in her interview had stated "I have been practicing with guys who are stronger and heavier for almost 5 years and that helped me a lot in the Olympics". Also,she showed her gratitude to her coach,Charles Atkinson.She is a recipient of Arjuna Award,The Padma Shri Award,the Rajiv Gandhi khel Ratna Award and a special award from the AIBA.A mother of twin sons, a caring wife, and an inspiring sportsperson, her achievements are of great inspiration not only to young people but also to the elderly.
